Madonna’s Rep Squashes Adoption Foul Play Rumors

Mar 31, 2009 Author: Perez Hilton | Filed under: News

Madonna is adamant on proving that she's not bending the rules to adopt little Mercy James from Malawi!

Reports are coming out of Malawi that civil society groups and human rights activists in the African country are saying the adoption could be considered "child trafficking."

Uh, what???

Could you explain that to us, please?

Madonna's rep, Liz Rosenberg, pupued the groups' allegations stating the following:

"The adoption process for Mercy began over a year ago when Madonna met her on one of her visits to Malawi. The connection was instant and profound… Madonna's desire to adopt Mercy is totally heartfelt. She is not skirting any legal issues in her application to adopt this child and is looking to provide a loving family environment and the best education and health care possible for a child who has been in an orphanage since her birth."

Rosenberg also stated that the country of Malawi has given Madge "tremendous support" regarding the adoption, including the support of President Bingu Wa Mutharika.

Of course she has support!

Her Madgesty's palace is a much better environment to raise a child in than a Malawi orphanage, wouldn't you say???

Oprah ‘Disheartened’ by School Expulsions

Mar 31, 2009 Author: TheInsider | Filed under: News
"The Insider" received a statement from Oprah Winfrey following reports that the talk show hosts' girls school in South Africa, The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, was forced to expel a number of students for inappropriate behavior. "I’m disappointed that several of our students chose to disregard the school’s rules. It’s disheartening when any student has to be suspended or expelled and it’s a process that involves serious review and consideration," Oprah said in a statement. A spokesperson for the school says several students were expelled last week after violating the Leadership Academy's code of conduct. The spokesperson did not go into detail as to what led to the expulsions saying it was a "confidential school matter." "We insist on maintaining a campus environment that commands mutual respect, fosters academic excellence and encourages learners to fulfill their best potential," Oprah said of the Leadership Academy. She continues, "Indiscretions resulting in disciplinary action are common in schools all over the world. Unfortunately, because of my name these common infractions place the Academy in the media spotlight."
